Wccftech’s best sports and racing games in 2021

If you’re like me, your time in a car or bike has been cut dramatically due to the ongoing pandemic, lockdowns, closures, and in general the habit of not traveling as much. Most of my trips go to concerts, which were non-existent until the second half of the year. As such, most of my driving time was behind a digital steering wheel. I prefer to go to the gym when it comes to exercise, although it was abruptly interrupted for a few months when a 46kg dumbbell decided to fall off a bench and smash my foot in four places. . In short, sports and racing games, let’s talk about it.

As in the lists of the best sports and racing games from previous years (2018, 2019, 2020) and other lists that I write, I am only including new games (not re-releases / remasters) and games fully published (no early access titles). As always, only games we’ve played can be listed, although that doesn’t mean every game featured has a review on the site. On that note, let’s take a look at the best sports and racing games of 2021, and don’t forget to vote in the community poll placed at the end.

Football Manager 2022 (9.5 / 10)

Kind: Sports. Platforms: PC (base game). Xbox One, Xbox Series S / X, Nintendo Switch, Mobile (other versions).

I wonder when Sports Interactive will fall into the trap of annualized series for years now. If you’re wondering what I mean by that, I mean I mean, I wonder when Football Manager gets a starter that looks half-baked, where it feels like it’s ‘just another’. Football Manager 2022 was not among those entries, and with the long-term plans already announced to integrate women’s football, the promises for the future are just as high.

When it comes to Football Manager 2022, the improvements throughout the game have taken it even further than the rest of the series. While some aspects still need improvement, such as repetitive press conferences, it’s still the video game that comes closest to recreating football. There is my summary of the review:

Steam Winter Sale has deals on Battlefield 2042, Cyberpunk 2077, Forza Horizon 5, more

Football Manager 2022 is another improvement over the long run, bringing the beautiful game to life more than ever and recreating both the big and small moments that make the sport so engaging. The options are nearly limitless, and the game puts even more at your fingertips, from the Data Hub to enhanced staff meetings, all on top of a revamped match engine. This is what Sports Interactive comes closest to perfecting, with only small elements that are aged and in need of polishing.

Forza Horizon 5 (9.5 / 10)

Kind: Races. Platforms: PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series S / X.

Forza Horizon 4 topped my 2018 list of the best sports and racing games three years ago. Honestly, even before Forza Horizon 5 hit shelves, I imagined we’d be into something special, something that would just deliver more of the undeniable and incredible fun that the Horizon Festival has become known for, and Playground Games no. did not disappoint.

Although a bit buggy at launch and now in dire need of a filter as the map now has more spots than the sailors’ favorite prostitute on the first day of shore leave, it’s impossible not to admire the game, the variety it offers in events, cars, landscapes and more. Damn, each of the places mentioned above is something to do, and the game is jam-packed, and it’s almost fun and almost never boring.

My summary of Forza Horizon, at the end of the review, was as follows:

Forza Horizon 5 is a new milestone for the series and arguably the best racing game ever. Offering a wealth of content through a fantastic representation of Mexico, its varied terrains and landscapes, there is so much to explore and browse. A massive roster of cars will perform it all, each feeling different from the others, with a variety of upgrade and tuning options almost matching those in simulation titles. While there are a few small flaws here and there, they’re almost so small that they’re hardly worth mentioning. All in all, it’s impossible not to recommend it to anyone, whether they’re a fan of racing games or not, so good.

F1 2021 (9/10)

Kind: Races. Platforms: PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series S / X.

Rarely does a year go by without a Codemasters game reaching this list, and with good reason. The reality is, no studio on the planet is as good as Codemasters at creating high quality racing games with their variety. This year, like most, F1 is on the Birmingham studio roster. Only this time, they brought a story with them.

Braking Point is F1 2021’s most notable feature and handles something Codemasters have tried and failed to achieve before. Aidan Jackson and the Return of Devon Butler, inspired by Drive to Survive on Netflix (as it seems to be with all Codemasters titles right now), features a strong story, characters and more that help you out to feel something for the face, beyond the thrill of winning. It’s still there, with the track action polished to a diamond-like sparkle.

F1 2021 has undeniably struggled with COVID and the limits it has placed on both sport and gaming. However, despite or because of these limitations, this achieves a step forward that the series has failed to take. Two years ago, that brings some real story to the game. Braking Point is an undeniable success and, hopefully, marks a starting point in which Codemasters can move forward as the series progresses. Beyond this new mode, almost every aspect has been polished to a diamond-like sheen, the only aspects needing improvement are the MyTeam mode, which already seems to be missing as a progression story from Braking Point, and the bad AI in team management. Despite this minor glitch, there’s no doubt in my mind that it’s the best in the franchise so far and a great starting point for the next gen.

FIFA 22 (8/10)

Kind: Sports. Platforms: PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series S / X, Nintendo Switch.

I’ll be honest; it’s a reluctant entry on the list. Why? This is because it is reluctantly that I praise games that are literally designed to prey on children or people with addictive tendencies. That’s what FIFA 22 and EA are: a predator. Not even the cool, cranky, fighter type of Schwarzenegger.

Whatever issues I have with predatory in-game play, there is no doubt that FIFA 22 is a great soccer game and truly next-gen. New “HyperMotion Technology” really adds to the feeling of controlling real, specific players. While there are still a few issues here and there, the quality on the pitch is undeniable, as are the fun inclusions like Volta and the arcade games that come with it.

FIFA 22 is an undeniably fantastic football game once you hit the pitch. HyperMotion technology and improved visuals, physics and more make this an incredibly tactical experience and closer to reality than ever before. The inevitable problem is when you look at insidious inclusions off the field like FUT, which – while a little more generous with in-game currency – is still incredibly predatory and pushes on gameplay mechanics in-game.

Republic Riders (8.5 / 10)

Kind: Sports and races. Platforms: PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series S / X, Nintendo Switch.

If I had to make a simple proclamation, I would say Riders Republic is essentially a sequel to Steep. It’s probably not the most grandiose statement to make, but there’s no doubt that this is a huge expansion on Steep in terms of quantity, despite having made a gap in the arcade. . Honestly, it works for Riders Republic, with various activities and locations available to you.

There is an undeniable level of fun to be found in Riders Republic, and more than that, it’s a truly beautiful game to experience as you travel, compete against other people. Here’s what Nate had to say in his review of the game:

Riders Republic’s posture is more than a bit bogus and the gameplay may be a bit mechanically straightforward for some, but its playing field is impressive. With journeys always tough, Ubisoft’s sometimes mind-blowing recreation of America’s greatest national parks seems like something to be thankful for, and the wide array of activities and challenges this game offers means almost everyone will be able to find a way to have fun among its peaks and valleys. . Riders Republic is a surprising breath of virtual fresh air.

2021 Sports and Running Games – Year in Review

Much like other genres and the rest of the industry, sports and racing games have had a slow year. Fortunately, the genre has several annualized titles, most of them rarely have mediocre entries. Football Manager, F1, and FIFA are all popping up on this list, with a few more annualized entries in the Honorable Mentions below, complemented by another standout title from Playground Games and a surprise entry from Ubisoft.

Honorable mentions

The two genres haven’t had a bad time this year. One glaring omission is Pro Evolution Soccer, thanks to Konami deciding to release a barely baked monstrosity called eFootball 2022. If I was a gambler, and I am, I imagine 2022 will be a better year for sports and the race.
